12/29/2025 – Reflections this time of year are normal as we move into a new one on the calendar. This also happens when one is older and has a birthday. Thus, my personal reflections always coincide near the new year.
Initially, I spent a portion of the day going back through my year. January had both my parents in care: Dad on hospice and Mom in rehab for a broken ankle. I juggled that until Spring Break when I also found out that my job at my school was closing due to funding. After arranging PT for Mom until she could drive, I had to have a melenoma removed from a should blade to look like a pirate. Interviews went well, and I Ianded a new instructional coaching position around my dad’s death over Easter. As I packed and transitioned, I prepped for Dad’s memorial. Summer brought mold remediation for Mom’s garage, and the start of the new school year with two more deaths in my family – my cousin and my husband’s cousin. When Mom and I decided to go get some rest over Fall Break, a semi-truck changed our plans. Thankfully, rest finally arrived over Thanksgiving Break, and I am back for more after Christmas.
Then, there is something about quiet solitude that allows one to realize the blessings of the year, too. First, being able to say a sweet and meaningful goodbye to a parent. Second, to get a job that one loves and that the parent would have loved. Third, to catch cancer early with no chemo needed. Fourth, to be welcomed warmly by two new faculties and sets of students. Fifth, to survive being hit by an 18-wheeler on an interstate. Sixth, to get a newer and better car than the one you had. Seventh, and most important, to have the love of Jesus Christ through every moment of your year and actually your life.
God works all things together for the good of those who love him, and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28) I truly believe this and have seen it especially throughout this year. It gives me hope for the next because that is what this season of Christmas and its celebration is all about – HOPE – eternal and everlasting.
