In comparing the BHAG/3 Column Table of Fink and the UbD Template, they both provide excellent structures for designing a course or a unit of study for the educator. They have details built into their processes to evoke thoughtful attention to detail to help the educator create a well-designed course or unit to meet various learning needs and success criteria (Fink, 2005; Wiggins, 2005).
Both design processes have primary goals. However, the BHAG/3 Column Table of Fink requires one overarching goal that is measurable along with focused goals in each phase. Whereas, the UbD Template can have more than one established goal with measurement as more of the focus in Stage 2. Both design processes center on the learner. However, the BHAG/3 Column Table of Fink focuses on the learner with Human and Caring components. Whereas, the UbD focuses on learning styles and tailoring the design to the varied needs, interests, and preferences of the learner. Each design process could learn from the other by Fink specifically addressing learning styles and UbD by bringing in the Caring component that is just more of an expected understanding as its design process is followed (Fink, 2005; Wiggins, 2005).
Each of these design processes have had me think more in-depth about the goal of my Innovation Plan and the learning environment that I am going to utilize to present my plan. A strong engaging rollout of my plan is needed for it to be successful, and in order to do that, I now realize that I need to prepare in detail – then revise and prepare even more. They say “practice makes perfect,” and it is really not talent that gets one there but perseverance and grit (Duckworth, 2013). By working through both design processes, I am getting more practice and spending time on what it will take to implement my Innovation Plan successfully, and this is all extremely beneficial to me.
Here is my UbD Template for Planning my Innovation Course:
